10Base-5 - Standard Thick Ethernet


10BASE-5 - Standard Thick Ethernet is called thick because of the thick
coaxial cabling (trunk cable) used in its application. 10 is for 10 Megabits
per second (Mbps) operation, BASE is for baseband operation, and 5 is
for a maximum of 500 meters of cable segment length. Communication
between stations is achieved through external transceivers attached to
the shared cabling or segment. The external transceiver is connected to a
Network Interface Card (NIC) via a transceiver cable.

10 BASE 5 PARAMETERS AND WIRING RULES
  • Maximum Length per segment is 500 meters or 1640 feet.
  • Maximum of 100 stations per segment are allowed.
  • Maximum of 1024 stations may be attached to a 10Base5 network.
  • Bus topology.
  • Up to 100 transceivers can be attached to a single 500 meter segment.
  • Only transceivers without SQE test enabled should be used with repeaters.
  • Minimum distance between transceivers is 2.5 feet.
  • Maximum length of standard AUI transceiver drop cable is 50 meters.
  • Maximum length of office transceiver cable is 12.5 meters.
  • Repeaters may be used to extend the signal thereby increasing overall cable segment length. Maximum length of cable is 2.5 km
    or 1.5 miles.
  • Maximum of 2 repeaters may be used between devices.
  • Both ends of the cable segment must be terminated with a 50 ohm terminator.
